Piranesi by Informatix

PiranesiPiranesi is a specialised '3D painting' tool, allowing you to start with a simple rendering of a 3D model, and quickly develop it into high quality images ready for client presentations. You can use Piranesi to quickly develop photorealistic images, by painting in textures and scenery with automatic perspective and masking; or you can Piranesi's wealth of effects to generate non-photorealistic images that have a more subtle, hand-rendered feel and focus the client's mind of what is important in the design. You can even use Piranesi with a 2D plan or elevation image, or to generate Panoramas!

With Piranesi there are three basic steps to creating images that will capture your clients' imaginations and help you win business.

Producing an artist’s impression for your creative concept can take effort, time and (if the illustrator is not an in-house resource) money too. These are all areas which are frequently not in abundance in a typical pitch scenario. All too often deadlines loom, illustrators are in short supply, and costs are racking up.

Piranesi is the solution - in a matter of minutes you can convert your 3D plain rendered to a stunning, persuasive artist's impression. Quickly, simply and cheaply.

Whichever 3D modeller you’re using, the likelihood is that there’s a means to directly or indirectly export to an EPix file, Piranesi’s specific image format. Once in Piranesi, follow a simple step-by-step process to creating highly powerful Non-Photorealistic (NPR) visualizations.  Thanks to David Walker of DeJong Design Associates for supplying sample step-by-step images from a recent project (click the images for a larger view):

STEP 1
STEP 1
You import a 3D image from a modeling package or rendering application. Alternatively you can transfer an image as a DXF file or 3DS file into the Vedute viewer (which is supplied with Piranesi) to create your starter image.
STEP 2
STEP 2
You begin work by painting effects, treatments, backgrounds and details onto this image. What’s clever about Piranesi is that it knows what every pixel is doing – what plane it is on, whether it is in the distance or foreground, and so on. So the experience is truly like painting in 3D.

STEP 3
STEP 3
Now you’ve done the basic work you can begin to bring your image to life. You can decide what visual genre you are adopting – watercolour, for example – and start to use artistic eff
ects to
emphasize particular features. If you do something
you like in a particular way, you can save the tool options as an ‘style’ to use as a short cut in future projects.
